Works for me Wednesday - Reading and Writing
That time of the week again! My works for me Wednesday this week has to do with learning to read and write.
I was reading from a very early age, but my penman ship left a bit to be desired.
So, my grandmother and I started corresponding. She only lived a 20 minute drive away but every week we would write each other a letter.
One of my fondest childhood memories is waiting for the mailman to arrive, or rushing home after school to see if there was any mail yet. Then, to sit down with my mam to read the letter and compose a new one together.

The letters were your basic "Hello Granny, how are you? I hope you are well? I am fine. " from my side but my Granny has kept them. So, in one go, I got to practice my penmanship, have a special activity with my Granny and mother and make a nice record of my life as a kid!
She has since done this with my little cousins too as they started to learn to read and write. A family tradition has been created and I really would like Munchkin to take it up too when the time comes.
In the age of e-mail and instant messaging. (Don't get me wrong, I love that too! Backspace was MADE for me!) I find that actual letter writing has been pushed to the side more and more and I think it's a shame. There's nothing quite like seeing a nice letter on your mat. (Instead of this incessant bills! ;)
I still like writing letters to friends and family but trying to find nice stationary is quite the task. I have not been able to find anything really nice for a very long time. If anyone knows of any place to get nice stationary (that deliver to Ireland.) Please let me know!
So, letter writing - Worked / Works for me!

I love this idea! Thanks for sharing. When Snuggle Bug gets older, he's going to learn penmanship by writing out Thank You cards for every gift that he gets. ;)
Oh, I emailed you a question, so check your email when you can, will you? Thanks!
Good luck on the test tomorrow!

By the way, thanks for your sympathetic comments to my Will my baby’s face be scarred? post! I went out and bought him two new hats to keep the sun off the scrape!

I love photography and taking pictures. With my digital camera, I've taken tons of pictures of flowers or other picturesque scenes in the town I live in. For stationery, I will print some photos with my printer onto photo paper, then paste them to nice, colorful cardstock that matches whatever is in the picture. I'm sure there are beautiful scenes in Ireland, and nice flowers you could photo to use to make these notecards. People seem to really enjoy getting these notecards, and they look great. Plus they are not too expensive. I'll also do this to make a set to give as gifts. Which is also a great gift, and cheap. (I'm a student, so I like to save all the money I can.) I could also make this a works-for-me post! But instead I have a great pasta recipe. Feel free to come on by!

Does Current deliver to Ireland? They have lots of beautiful note cards, primarily, but some stationery, too. Good for you for helping to keep the almost-lost art of letter-writing alive! There's nothing like receiving a hand-written envelope in the mail.

That is so sweet. I have great-aunts to whom I still hand-write and they cherish every letter. Now I'm feeling remiss that I haven't written to them in a while, ah. Happy Wednesday - we're also hosting the Carnival of the Vanities today - busy day in duck-land!

Hi! I'm at your blog for the first time and I have a great suggestion for stationary. I recently got married and was too cheap to buy those fancy thank-yous with our name in raised ink from the invitation company so I ordered some from Chelseapaper.com. They were much less expensive and turned out to be pretty good quality and beautiful! We chose the "White Linen Thank You" and they even came with the envelopes.

I agree. Getting a "real letter" in the mail makes my heartbeat quicken. Writing, actual writing, has become a lost art.
